This document highlights the cases of some long-term political prisoners held under South Korea’s National Security Law. Many of the prisoners have been held in poor conditions for over 28 years. At least 15 were convicted at unfair trials during the 1970s and 1980s. Several were given long sentences in the 90s for “spying” or establishing a socialist organization. A large scale prisoner amnesty is expected to be announced in August and Amnesty International hopes that many of the prisoners mentioned in this report will be included in it.
