In March 2007, Australian national David Hicks became the first person to be sentenced by a military commission. He had pleaded guilty to one charge of “providing material support for terrorism”. Pursuant to a pre-trial agreement, he was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment and he will be transferred to Australian custody. United Kingdom resident Bisher al-Rawi, an Iraqi national, is being transferred to the UK after more than four years in unlawful detention. Saudi national Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri has alleged that he had only admitted to involvement in the attack on the USS Cole under torture in US custody.
