Equatorial Guinea: Post-election human rights violations

In August 1995 the Equatorial Guinean government declared an amnesty for a number of political prisoners. AI welcomes the releases but is concerned by news of further human rights violations leading up to and following Equatorial Guinea’s first democratic municipal elections held in September 1995. The municipal elections were won by the ruling Equatorial Guinean Democratic Party (PDGE) but the Joint Opposition Platform are contesting the results and are supported by international observers. Since the election hundreds of people suspected of voting for the opposition have been arrested, one man was killed when security forces opened fire on villagers celebrating local opposition candidates victory and scores of government employees have lost their jobs either for voting for the opposition or for refusing to sign their allegiance to the PGDE.
