Same-sex Marriage Bill in Taiwan
On 26 December 2016, Taiwan's Legislative Yuan's Judiciary and Organic Laws and Statues Committee passed draft amendments to the Civil Code that would legalize same-sex marriage in Taiwan. This was the first reading of the bill. It will then be referred to a party caucus for further negotiations and a second and third readings for discussion, re-examination and then conclusion in the full general assembly. Supporters of same-sex marriage raised many other issues in the debates on same-sex relationships in Taiwan including the right to participate in medical decisions for incapacitated partners, legal claims concerning shared property and various concerns about adoption, parental and surrogacy rights.
