USA: Guantánamo detentions, 15 years and counting
Will President Donald Trump keep the detention facility at Guantánamo open and order that it be ready to receive new detainees? There has been no new detainee arrival at Guantánamo since 14 March 2008. President Trump’s two immediate predecessors, President Barack Obama and President George W. Bush, each said they wanted to close the facility. Among those long calling for its closure have been UN treaty monitoring bodies. This is a matter of the USA’s international law obligations. Amnesty International will continue to call for closure as it first did in 2005.
