Jamaica: Justice system must be strengthened for the effective protection of human rights: Amnesty International submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, May 2015

In this submission, Amnesty International expresses alarm at the high rate of physical and sexual violence against women and girls. Further, the organization is extremely concerned about the allegations of excessive use of force by members of the Jamaican Constabulary Force and the pattern of impunity which persists. Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LBGTI) persons is prevalent, and sex between men continues to be criminalised in violation of the country’s international obligations. Amnesty International regrets that, the government is not considering establishing a formal moratorium on the death penalty.
