Between 1982 and 1989 several hundred people in Casamance region were arrested for political reasons connected with a campaign for greater autonomy; some were convicted on the basis of statements to the police which may have been made under duress. About 10 people remain in prison. The document consists of two parts: a short introductory paper written in May 1990, which updates the second part, a memorandum from AI to the Senegalese Government one year earlier. The memorandum describes individual cases of torture, including rape, and cases of death in detention which may have been due to torture. The Senegalese Government’s response to the charges made by AI is also documented.
