Morocco: Amnesty International submission for the UN Universal Periodic Review – 27th session of the UPR Working group, May 2017

, Índice: MDE 29/5470/2016

Since Morocco’s last review the government has taken some steps towards adopting some of the recommendations, yet has ignored other key recommendations. Amnesty International is concerned about ongoing restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly, including by prosecuting journalists, forcibly dispersing peaceful protests, and restricting the activities of NGOs. The organization regrets that the current draft law to amend the Penal Code leaves provisions that restrict the right to freedom of expression largely unchanged. Furthermore, same-sex sexual relations between consenting adults continue to be criminalized and Morocco has yet to adopt a law on the right to asylum.
