Egypt: Agents of repression: Egypt’s police and the case for reform

, Índice: MDE 12/029/2012

The beating to death by police of a young man in Alexandria in June 2010 led to mass campaigning against police brutality and was a major trigger of the “25 January Revolution”. This report details human rights abuses committed by the police, ranging from unlawful killings of protesters to torture of prisoners. It calls on the authorities to take significant steps to reform the police, starting with addressing the legacy of past police abuses. Without such reforms, the police will continue to be seen as agents of repression rather than protectors of fundamental rights.
