Since the anti-government uprising in January 2011, Egyptians have lived in a near-constant state of turmoil and political instability, with two presidents ousted, two constitutions approved and a succession of governments. One constant throughout these dramatic upheavals has been violence against women and girls and the authorities’ failure to take any meaningful action to tackle it. With the Egyptian authorities now promising to deliver a national strategy to combat violence against women, it is time for them to put the rights of women firmly back on the political agenda.
