2008 Elections to the Human Rights Council: Background information on candidate countries

In May 2008, UN Member States will elect 15 members of the UN Human Rights Council. General Assembly resolution 60/251 provides that members elected “shall uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights and fully cooperate with the Council”. In order to assist Member States, Amnesty International is providing in this document a brief review of key human rights issues in candidate countries as well as an overview of their record of ratification and cooperation with the treaty bodies and Special Procedures.
