The UN Human Rights Council must urge States to address barriers to girls’ right to education

, Índice: IOR 40/1703/2015

Amnesty International submitted this statement to the 29th session of the UN Human Rights Council (15 June- 3 July 2015) in connection with the Panel discussion on realising the equal enjoyment of the right to education by every girl, which the Council will hold on 16 June 2015. The statement illustrates the impact of persistent gender discrimination and inequality in society in creating barriers to women’s and girl’s full enjoyment of their right to education as well as other human rights. The statement makes recommendations to the Council towards addressing those concerns, including with regard to the development of gender-sensitive educational curricula and teaching methodologies, access to sexual and reproductive health education, addressing gender-based violence, and accountability and access to remedies.
