Bosnia-Herzegovina: Rape and sexual abuse by armed forces

This report provides details of cases which illustrate the sexual abuse of women in the context of the conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina. They are based on interviews conducted by AI, journalists and women’s and human rights groups. It also refers to three cases alleged to have taken place during the conflict in Croatia. Reports indicate that all sides have committed such abuses but that Muslim women have been the chief victims and that the main perpetrators are members of the Serbian armed forces. The victims include young girls and elderly women. Details are given of rapes in Bosanski Petrovac, Kotor Varos, Klujc, Novi Grad and Bosanski Brod. Women were allegedly raped in detention at Trnopolje, Omarska, Dretelj, Caparde, Visegrad, Teslic and Sarajevo.
