Russian Federation: Beaten up for speaking out: Attacks on human rights defenders in the Russian Federation

This December the Russian Federation will mark its 20th anniversary. During this period, however, the Russian authorities have invested more effort into managing civil society and controlling criticism, than creating the conditions for its organic growth and expression. Attacks on human rights defenders and journalists by law enforcement and other public officials clearly violate Russia’s human rights obligations. This report focuses on a number of different groups that are at particular risk of attack from both state and non-state actors.
