Cyprus: A summary of Amnesty International's human rights concerns

Over 60 men have been imprisoned since the beginning of the 1990s because of their refusal on conscientious grounds to perform military service. Allegations of torture and ill-treatment continue to be received and the provision for the use of the death penalty remains in law. This document provides information on the cases of conscientious objectors Omiros Andreou Constantinou, Christakis Andrea Trisokka, Christakis Christophorou, Pelopidas Georgiou Nikolaou, Andreas Ioanni Demetriou, Loukas Andreou Hatzipanayis, Theocharis Theokli Theocharidis, Iosif Costa Kourides and Christos Panikou Christophy. Allegations of torture and ill-treatment have been made in the cases of Michalis Loukas, Mehmet Canbulut, Dimos Dimosthenous and Lycourgos Vassiliou.
