Since autumn 2013, Bulgaria has received international attention for its treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. In January 2014 the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called for a temporary suspension of transfers of asylum-seekers to Bulgaria from other EU Member States. The UNHCR announced that it will re-examine its position by 1 April 2014. Despite improvements in the reception conditions and steps taken to ensure quicker access to asylum procedures, Amnesty International remains concerned over the systemic deficiencies in the treatment of asylum seekers in Bulgaria.
