Republic of Korea (South Korea): Open letter to President Kim Young-sam on the death penalty

In this letter Amnesty International expresses concern at the continued use of the death penalty in South Korea. There are currently some 50 prisoners, convicted of murder, under sentence of death, and there have been concerns raised about the arbitrary use of the death penalty, allegations of ill-treatment during police questioning and unfair trial procedures. Amnesty International is calling on the South Korean government to take immediate steps towards the abolition of the death penalty.
