Charles Campbell was executed by hanging as scheduled in Washington on 27 May
Campbell was executed after the US Supreme Court denied an appeal that hanging
constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. According to press reports, when
Campbell heard that his appeal had been denied he refused to leave his death
row cell and had to be subdued with pepper spray to be taken to a holding room
prior to the execution.
