Zimbabwe: No justice for the victims of forced evictions
In May 2005 the government of Zimbabwe launched Operation Murambatsvina, a programme of mass forced evictions and demolitions, which resulted in people losing their homes and/or their livelihoods. In June 2005 the government launched Operation Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle, and claimed it would provide housing to those who lost homes during Operation Murambatsvina. Amnesty International has found that almost none of the victims of Operation Murambatsvina have benefited from Operation Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle. Amnesty International recommends that the government of Zimbabwe immediately halt all forced evictions and that Operation Garikai/Hlalani Kuhle be subject to an urgent and comprehensive review.
