Chad: Extrajudicial executions in Doba (includes correction)

, Índice: AFR 20/012/1992

Government forces in the southern town of Doba went through the town on 17 August 1992, reportedly shooting and killing unarmed men, women and children. On that day and the days following, more than 100 people are said to have been killed and shops and businesses looted. AI is concerned that the government of Chad appears to have taken no steps to carry out a formal inquiry or bring those responsible to justice. Instead, the authorities have concentrated on disputing the number of victims. The countryside around Doba has been affected since early 1992 by the violent activities of an insurgent group known as the Comite de sursaut national pour la paix et la democratie. They had held several government officials captive on 16 August and had attacked government forces.
