Twenty-five years on, Chinese citizens continue to be persecuted for trying to remember the events of 1989 when hundreds, if not thousands, of protesters were killed or injured on the night of 3 and 4 June after the People’s Liberation Army opened fire on unarmed civilians. The weeks leading up to the 25th anniversary on 4 June have seen activists placed in detention while others have been questioned by police or placed under house arrest, as the authorities try to prevent people from publicly remembering those who died in the crackdown.
<thumbnail_url>https://www.amnesty.org/en/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/56525_pro-democracy_protestor_blocking_tanks-1.jpg</thumbnail_url></oembed>
