Authorities in the Netherlands have deferred the forcible return of a number of Iraqis on a flight scheduled to leave for Baghdad, Iraq, on 3 November 2010, following a strongly worded letter sent to the Dutch authorities by the European Court of Human Rights.

Amnesty International has received credible reports indicating that the Dutch authorities are planning to forcibly return an unspecified number of individuals whose asylum claims have been rejected to Baghdad, Iraq, on 3 November 2010. Their lives could be at serious risk in Iraq.

Monica Castillo Paez was forcibly expelled from Sweden on 21 August, accompanied by Swedish officials. She asked for asylum in transit at Schipol Airport, Amsterdam, en route to Peru. The authorities in the Netherlands are now examining her asylum claim.
