After suffering decades of under-investment, government negligence, and crushing poverty, the province of Cabo Delgado, the poorest in Mozambique, is now the site of a raging insurgency. Over 1,300 civilians have been killed; another 500,000 have been displaced, and towns and villages have been left in ruins. Fighting has intensified since an armed group locally known as Al-Shabaab attacked the northern port town of Mocímboa da Praia in October 2017.

Human Rights Council must promote accountability and protect the rights of detained civilians in Yemen

In this oral statement, delivered at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Amnesty International welcomes the update of the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen, and urges the UN Security Council to refer the situation in Yemen to the International Criminal Court and urge all parties to the conflict to release all individuals imprisoned solely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression.

Venezuela: International Criminal Court Prosecutor must include new mass extrajudicial executions in preliminary examination

In a new open-source investigation, Venezuela: Impunity in the face of lethal policy of social control, that collected evidence verified by its Crisis Evidence Lab, Amnesty International considers the deaths of at least 14 men in the La Vega area of Caracas, between 6 and 9 January 2021, as probable extrajudicial executions and calls for the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to include these facts in its preliminary examination of the crimes against humanity that have and are being committed by state agents in Venezuela.

Nigeria: Attacks on schools undermine right to education

Responding to the abduction of 42 persons by gunmen at the Government Science College Kagara Niger state Nigeria, in the early hours of today, Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said:   “We condemn this appalling attack, which is the latest in a string of attacks on schools in northern Nigeria. Attacks on schools and abductions of children are war crimes. Those found to be responsible of the abduction must be brought to justice for these and other human rights abuses.

Libya: Ten years after uprising abusive militias evade justice and instead reap rewards

A decade after the overthrow of Muammar al-Gaddafi, justice has yet to be delivered to victims of war crimes and serious human rights violations including unlawful killings, enforced disappearances, torture, forced displacement and abductions committed by militias and armed groups, Amnesty International said today. Libyan authorities have promoted and legitimized leaders of militias that have been responsible for heinous acts of abuse, instead of ensuring accountability and redress for violations committed both since al-Gaddafi’s fall and under his rule.

Nigeria: Open letter to the OTP requesting immediate action on the situation in Nigeria

Northeast Nigeria has been the scene of an armed conflict characterized by egregious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law for over a decade. On 11 December 2020 the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) concluded that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed by Boko Haram and the Nigerian military and that Nigerian authorities had failed to investigate and prosecute these crimes, therefore warranting a full investigation by the OTP into the situation in Nigeria.

Colombia: Protect environmental defenders at risk

On 8 February, unidentified persons distributed threatening pamphlets giving 72 hours for Luis Alberto González López to leave the territory before becoming a military objective near the place of his residence in the city of Barrancabermeja. Luis González López is the vice-president of FEDEPESAN, an organization that protects the environment in the Magdalena medio region (central Colombia). The pamphlet was signed by the National Liberation Army (ELN).

Colombia: Protect Human Rights Organization at Risk: ADISPA

On 10 February, a civil society organization received a verified report of an ongoing plan to kill or displace Association for the Integral and Sustainable Development of the Amazonian Pearl (ADISPA) members, an organization protecting the rights of hundreds of peasants (campesinos) in the Putumayo region (South West). The plan would entail the deployment of the armed group called “Border Command” that are threatening the communities in the area to subordinate their activities to the armed group’s will or leave their territories if they refuse.

Ethiopia: Government must honour promise of humanitarian access to Tigray

Israel/OPT: Historic ICC ruling brings new hope to victims of crimes under international law

The Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has ruled that the ICC has jurisdiction over Rome Statute crimes committed in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), offering new hope for victims to access justice. The ruling opens the way for an investigation into crimes committed in the OPT since June 13, 2014. These include allegations against Israel of war crimes, including settlement-related activities, and crimes against humanity, such as persecution, deportation and transfer, as well as the crime of apartheid against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem; crimes allegedly committed by Israel and Palestinian armed groups during the 2014 assault on Gaza and during the Great March of Return protests in 2018-19; and allegations against the Palestinian authorities in the West Bank of torture and support for attacks against Israeli citizens.

Mozambique: Call for human rights sensitivity: Amnesty International submission for the UN Universal Periodic Review, 38th Session of the UPR Working Group, April 2021

This submission was prepared for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Mozambique in May 2021. In it, Amnesty International evaluates the implementation of recommendations made to Mozambique in its previous UPR, including in relation to ending arbitrary detentions, repression of freedom of expression, excessive use of force, torture, ill-treatment and extrajudicial executions of detainees. Amnesty International raises concern about abusive practices in pandemic response measures, killings and pillaging in Cabo Delgado conflict, repression of freedom of expression, impunity, violation of the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, and the adverse impact of corporate activities on human rights.

Central African Republic: Arrest and transfer of former Seleka armed group leader to the ICC, a positive step towards justice for victims
