Women in Mexico should be able to search for their disappeared loved ones without fear

Every day in Mexico, women risk their lives, health, family, community relationships, and their own resources to search for their loved ones. Supporting their work is crucial in helping end the country’s crisis of disappearances. Mexico must guarantee their right to search.

What is the problem?

Araceli, Beatriz, Bibiana, Karla, Mary, María Isabel, and all the women who tirelessly search for disappeared people are brave beyond measure. They carry out their work in a context where the attacks they suffer—including murder—often go unpunished, and no authority guarantees their safety.

Together, with their communities and collectives, and in the absence of effective state action, they help ensure truth and justice in a country with more than 128,000 recorded disappearances.

Moreover, women searchers often contribute their own, often limited, resources and exhaust themselves in the process—physically, mentally, and emotionally—with negative consequences for their health and relationships.

The government of Mexico has an opportunity to take responsibility and ensure that women searchers can continue their work without fear of reprisals and with dignity.

What can you do to help?

Mexico must guarantee the rights of women searching for disappeared people, and bring an end to a nationwide crisis.
