Shut down Alligator Alcatraz now

Take action to shut down the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center before it becomes the model for future abuses.

What’s the problem?

Take action to shut down the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention center before it becomes the model for future abuses.

Formally known as the South Florida Detention Facility, this newly built immigration facility has been mired in controversy since it opened in July 2025. Nicknamed for its remote swamp-like location, it has quickly become notorious for inhumane conditions, while also facing criticism for harming the fragile Everglades ecosystem and being built on Indigenous land.

Inside, people are crammed into overcrowded cages around bunk beds with little room to move. Food is spoiled and maggot-infested. Mosquitoes swarm constantly, showers are scarce, and extreme heat and humidity make the center unbearable. There appear to be almost no reliable or confidential means for detainees to communicate with their attorneys or family members.

This facility was rushed into operation with almost no oversight. What we are seeing now is a preview of how detention will expand if we don’t act. It is cruel, unsafe, and unnecessary.

No one should be subjected to these conditions. Immigration detention must never become a dumping ground for human rights abuses.

What can you do to help?

Act now! Demand that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis immediately shut down Alligator Alcatraz. Together, we can stop this before it goes any further.
