Myanmar (Burma): Unfair political trials

Amnesty International’s concerns about trials of political prisoners in Myanmar are described in this report. In particular, the organization believes that the summary procedures used by military courts restrict the defendant’s rights of defence and appeal and that prisoners of conscience are among those sentenced in such unfair trials. Procedures in civilian courts are briefly commented upon and allegations of military interference with the civilian judiciary are reported. Another concern is the use of detention without trial against political opponents, e.g. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and U Nu. In some cases controversial trials have been stopped by the military, as in the case of U Kaweinda, a well-known and politically popular buddhist monk.
