Hong Kong: Suspension of extradition bill not enough

Responding to Hong Kong chief executive, Carrie Lam’s announcement on Saturday that the proposed extradition bill will be ‘suspended’, Man-Kei Tam, Director of Amnesty Hong Kong, commented:

“A suspension of the extradition bill is not enough, it must be dropped completely as it poses a real threat to the human rights of people in Hong Kong.

“For Carrie Lam to claim the police response on Wednesday was entirely defensive flies in the face of the facts.  There must be a full effective and independent investigation into the unlawful use of tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray against the vast majority of peaceful protesters.”
