On Wednesday, 4 March 2009, the Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will make public its decision regarding the ICC Prosecutor’s request to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al Bashir.
Amnesty International has been closely following the case and Secretary General Irene Khan, along with other experts, will be available for broadcast interviews in English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
The announcement is scheduled to be made at a press conference in The Hague at 14.00 local time (13.00 GMT). Amnesty International spokespeople will be available for comment and analysis.
The decision will come more than seven months after ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo submitted to ICC judges evidence of crimes committed in Darfur over the last five years, allegedly on the ‘direct orders’ of President al Bashir.
Luis Moreno Ocampo submitted to the Pre-Trial Chamber evidence that he says gives ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ that President al Bashir bears criminal responsibility for 10 counts of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
