Amnesty International’s Secretary General to assess Chile’s human rights – ITINERARY

Amnesty International’s Secretary General Irene Khan will lead a visit to Chile between 3 and 8 November 2008, ten years on from the arrest of Augusto Pinochet in London.  

During the visit, Irene Khan will meet survivors and relatives of victims of human rights abuses committed during the Pinochet regime, as well as some of those suffering abuses today – including members of indigenous communities in Temuco and Calama. She will also meet government and civil society representatives to discuss the human rights challenges facing Chile, as well as participate in public events.

Amnesty International’s delegation will include: Javier Zuñiga, Senior Advisor; Judit Arenas, Head of the Office of the Secretary General; Louise Finer, researcher on South America and Sergio Laurenti, Director of Amnesty International Chile.

Highlights of Ms Khan’s programme include:

Monday 3rd – Santiago 15:30 – Irene Khan will meet with organizations of relatives of victims of human rights abuses committed during the Pinochet regime.

16:45 – Irene Khan will meet with organizations working on abuses against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people.

17:15: Irene Khan will meet with organizations working on women’s rights.

18:00 – Visit to Parque por la Paz Villa Grimaldi accompanied by former detainee (photo opportunity)

Tuesday 4th  – Temuco 11:00 – Meeting with Observatorio Ciudadano               12:15 – Meeting journalists who will join AI’s visit to Indigenous communities

13:30 – Visit Collipulli Indigenous community and Mapuche prisoners in the Angol prison.

16:00 – Meeting Regional Chief of Police

17:00 – Meeting with Intendente of Temuco

Wednesday 5th – Calama 10:30 – Irene Khan will meet with human rights defenders at the Park Hotel Calama

14:00 – Visit Chui-Chui Indigenous community

16:30 – Visit Caravan of Death memorial

18:30 – Irene Khan will meet with local authorities.

Thursday 6th – Santiago 10.30 – Meeting with Minister of Interior

12:30 – Irene Khan will deliver the keynote speech “Global Challenges to Human Rights in FLACSO – Room Norbert Lecher, Av. Dag Hammarsjold, 3269, Vitacura.

19:00 – Irene Khan will open the art exhibition “30 Chilean artists in the year of Human Rights” Museo de San Francisco, Londres 4, Santiago de Chile.   Friday 7th – Santiago Agenda to be confirmed
