Nicaragua: Respect for human rights is key to resolving crisis

In the context of the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas director at Amnesty International, has said:

“The human rights situation in Nicaragua continues to deteriorate badly. Despite the apparent calm, there are constant allegations of arbitrary detention and torture of people deprived of their liberty. The civil society organizations whose legal registration was canceled by the government are still unable to work freely in the country and the harassment of journalists and human rights defenders has not stopped either.”

If the government of Daniel Ortega is really willing to end this crisis, it must ensure right away that victims have access to justice, truth and reparation, as well as guaranteeing the immediate release of all the student leaders, activists and other protesters detained solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.

“The Human Rights Council has an opportunity to support the victims of grave human rights violations and issue a resolution that sends a strong message to the government of Daniel Ortega. The international community must not allow the Nicaraguan state to keep delaying the fulfillment of its human rights obligations.”

“If the government of Daniel Ortega is really willing to end this crisis, it must ensure right away that victims have access to justice, truth and reparation, as well as guaranteeing the immediate release of all the student leaders, activists and other protesters detained solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.”
