A year has passed since the EU-Turkey Deal came into effect. Yet thousands of refugees remain stranded on Chios, in a desperate and seemingly endless limbo as the seasons roll by.
April 2016. Amnesty International reporting from Greece just after the EU-Turkey Deal came into force. Under the agreement, all "irregular migrants" arriving from Turkey face being sent back. But for every Syrian refugee returned, another Syrian already in Turkey was meant to be resettled to the EU. Leaders say it was designed to halt the dangerous sea crossings. But returns to Turkey have not happened in the way they expected, resulting in severe overcrowding and a humanitarian disaster on the Greek islands.
