Support access to legal abortion in El Salvador
Right now, you can support the thousands of women and men in El Salvador demanding that their legislators put an end to the country’s inhumane total ban on abortion.
Many women and girls have lost their lives or have suffered permanent disabilities due to the total abortion ban. This ban forces them to resort to unsafe, secret abortions - or to carry a pregnancy to term, even when it puts their life and health at risk.
Since 1998, El Salvador has criminalised abortion in all circumstances, even when the pregnancy is the result of rape, or when the life or health of the pregnant woman or girl is at risk. To give just one example, Amnesty documented the case of a nine-year old girl who fell pregnant as a result of abuse and was forced to carry her pregnancy to term, putting her life at risk.
We now have an opportunity to turn things around. A movement of Salvadorans are urging legislators to support a reform that would decriminalise abortion under certain circumstances: when the pregnancy poses a risk to the life or health of the woman, in cases of fatal foetal impairment, when the pregnancy is the result of rape or sex trafficking, and when the pregnancy is the result of sexual abuse against a minor.
Add your voice to those of the women and men demanding an end to the total ban on abortion. Sign our petition calling on El Salvadorian legislators to listen to their demands and support the proposed reform.
We are very close to changing the lives of women and girls in El Salvador. This reform almost has enough support from members of the Legislative Assembly to be passed. If we hand in a petition with the signatures of thousands of people before the legislature changes in April this year, we have a real possibility to achieve the change that so many have been seeking since 1998.
