Stand in solidarity with people in Argentina to decriminalise abortion
Criminalizing abortion does not stop people from having abortions, it makes them less safe. It’s Argentina’s turn to decriminalize abortion, and you can help support the people campaigning to make it happen.
Right now, in Argentina, as well as in many countries around the world, abortion is criminalized - except in very limited circumstances. People who get pregnant and cannot or do not want to continue with the pregnancy are often forced to make an impossible choice: put their lives at risk or go to jail. As a result, every year in Argentina, half a million pregnant people risk their lives by carrying out abortions without the right professional medical care and since 1983, over 3,000 people have died from unsafe abortions.
A few days ago, an 11-year-old girl in the province of Tucumán was denied her right to an abortion after being raped by her grandmother's partner. When she entered the hospital requesting a legal abortion, the medical authorities had a duty to protect her life and health. Instead, they put up obstacle after obstacle, with the sole purpose of denying the girl her rights.
In February, she had to undergo an emergency cesarean that could have been avoided, a cruel injustice inflicting untold physical and psychological harm on the girl. This tragic case is yet more evidence that Argentina's draconian abortion legislation needs to change.
