Speak out for those who defend their homes and our environment
Did you know that protecting the environment in Mexico can be a death sentence?
Mexico is one of the countries with the greatest variety of plants and animals in the world. At the same time, it is one of the most dangerous countries for people who defend forests, animals, seas and rivers, whether maintaining their customs as peoples, raising their voices through community media, or denouncing the impacts that electric or mining projects have on nature.
Julián Carrillo is one of these people. He was killed in October 2018 for publicly denouncing logging and mining in his community in Coloradas de la Virgen, Chihuahua. Like Julián, there are other defenders who are continually attacked. In 2019 alone, 12 murders of people defending land, territory and the environment have been reported.
You can change this. Sign this action and ask President López Obrador to speak out publicly about the situation and recognize the work of these people who care for our planet and the environment. Ask him to ensure their protection through a preventive public policy, to prevent further killings, and to combat structural causes so that they can carry out their work without fear of reprisals.
