Since it was last reviewed in 2012, Algeria has taken steps to strengthen human rights guarantees with limited impact. The authorities continue to threaten and harass human rights defenders, journalists and activists while current legislation restricts the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly. Although Algeria has taken positive steps to address sexual and gender-based violence, women and girls continue to face discrimination in both law and practice. The authorities have also failed to investigate past and present abuses. Migrants remain vulnerable to violence and other abuses and courts continue to hand down death sentences.
