Algerian authorities have ramped up their repression of online and offline peaceful dissent across the country in recent weeks. Courts have handed prison terms to a cartoonist in El M’Ghair in the wilaya (province) of El Oued (southeast of Algeria), and are prosecuting an activist for a Facebook post. Twelve peaceful protesters in El Oued and Tamanrasset were sentenced to imprisonment, and a human rights activist risks the death penalty.
