Medical letter writing action: Syria: Riad al-Turk

Amnesty International (AI) is gravely concerned about the situation of Riad al-Turk, aged 60, a prisoner of conscience who has been held incommunicado for over ten years without charge or trial. Riad al-Turk is a lawyer and was First Secretary of the banned Communist Party Political Bureau (CPPB). He suffers from diabetes with a number of serious complications affecting the kidneys, eyes and cardiovascular system. He has been hospitalized several times after becoming comatose, most recently in March 1991. He has also been reportedly subjected to torture and is said to have suffered hearing loss as a result. There is no indication that the Syrian authorities intend to bring him to trial.
