URGENT ACTION
SULAIMAN AL-JASSEM RELEASED
Prisoner of conscience Sulaiman al-Jassem was released on 22 October, and had his
conviction overturned by the Misdemeanours Appeal Court.
The Misdemeanours Appeal Court ordered the release of Sulaiman al-Jassem on 22 October 2014, and
overturned his conviction. His lawyers had appealed against his one-month prison sentence and requested that he
be released.
Sulaiman al-Jassem had been sentenced on 19 October 2014 after an unfair trial by a Misdemeanours Court on
charges of “gathering with more than five people in order to commit a crime, “participating in an illegal gathering”
and “failing to obey police orders to disperse”. He was arrested at his home the next day.
Sulaiman al-Jassem, a lawyer and member of the National Committee for Monitoring Violations, a civil society
group, told Amnesty International he believed this UA had been a key factor in his release, together with the work
of local and international organizations. He is grateful for all the work and support he has received and his family
felt they were not alone.
No further action is requested by the UA Network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
