This report focuses on the torture and other ill-treatment of political detainees in pre-trial detention by the General Intelligence Department (GID), a military security agency which detains and interrogates individuals suspected of political and security offences. GID officers have extensive powers and benefit from near total impunity, acting virtually as a law unto themselves and can prolong detentions for weeks or months at a time. Those held for interrogation by the GID have frequently alleged that they were tortured to “confess” while held in prolonged incommunicado detention.
