8 July 2016 marks the second anniversary of Israel’s 50-day military offensive in Gaza, codenamed Operation Protective Edge, which brought unprecedented death and destruction to the Gaza Strip in 2014. Both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups committed war crimes and other serious violations of international law during the hostilities. Neither side has held anyone to account, nor conducted genuine, independent criminal investigations. Two years on, victims on both sides are still waiting for justice, whether through genuine domestic investigations or international justice mechanisms.
