Israel and the Occupied Territories: Jarah ‘Abdullah Abu al-Hayjah – administrative detention

The above-named, who comes from the Jenin area on the West Bank, was arrested on 3 July 1991 and issued with a four-month detention order. He is currently being held in the Ketziot detention centre. He appealed against the order and at a hearing held on 28 August 1991 it was revealed to him and his lawyer that he had allegedly participated in stone throwing, in disturbing public order and encouraging others to be active in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (a faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization). His detention order however was reduced by two weeks and he is now due for release on 16 October 1991. Amnesty International is concerned that he may not have been given an adequate opportunity to challenge his detention order.
