More than 400 Palestinians from the Occupied Territories, reportedly including 10 doctors, were deported from Israel on 17 December 1992. The deportations came in response to the killing of Israeli Border Policeman Nissim Toledano by the Islamic group Hamas, who had taken him hostage. The Israeli authorities suspect the deportees of being Hamas supporters. The deportees are currently stranded in freezing conditions in the “no-man’s land” between the security zone controlled by Israel and the South Lebanon Army and the rest of Lebanon. There are fears for the mens’ health due to the lack of food, medical supplies and clean water. AI is calling on the Israeli authorities to allow the deportees to return immediately and safely.
