Israel and the Occupied Territories: ‘Izzat Muhammad Shehadah Zaydan Ghazzawi: Prisoner of conscience

The above-named, a 40-year-old English language instructor at Bir Zeit University on the West Bank, was arrested on 22 February 1989. He was detained for one month without access to a lawyer and allegedly maltreated. On 2 March 1989 he made a confession and on 4 May was charged with membership of al-Fatah, a faction of the PLO, and with involvement in the drafting of leaflets for a proscribed organization. He was tried before the Lod Military Court and pleaded guilty. According to court records, ‘Izzat Ghazzawi presented himself as a pacifist and claimed that he had become involved in drafting the leaflets in question in order to reflect his own non-violent views. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment, 33 months of which were to be suspended for three years.
