Avraham Marcus Klingberg, a 75-year-old physician, has been held in Ashkelon Prison since 1983 following conviction on charges of espionage. His detention and trial remained officially secret until recently. He was apparently held for almost eight years in complete isolation. About two years ago his conditions of detention were relaxed and he shares a cell with one other person and is allowed strictly controlled visits once a week. However, according to reports, he has been in extremely poor health, with hypertension and health problems. On 16 November he is reported to have suffered a stroke.
