Israel and the Occupied Territories: ‘Adnan Muhammad Abu Shamma – Administrative detention

The above-named, a commerce student from Salfit near Tulkarem on the West Bank, was arrested on 23 September 1990. He was issued with a six-month administrative detention order five months after his arrest, two weeks before the order was due to expire. ‘Adnan Abu Shamma has spent two previous periods in administrative detention. He is believed to have appealed against the order on 14 January 1991, but the result of the appeal is not known. Amnesty International does not yet have enough information to determine whether ‘Adnan Abu Shamma is a prisoner of conscience; the organization is also concerned that he may not have had an adequate opportunity to challenge the order.
