In the last few years, the Egyptian authorities have managed to muzzle civil society by threatening with detention and imprisonment those who oppose or publicly criticize the government’s policies. This report provides details of those groups whose right to freedom of expression has been frequently threatened – journalists, human rights defenders, NGO activists, those accused of belonging to the Muslim Brothers and writers and religious groups who have been sentenced for “offending religion”. The report also contains a section on the abuses and death threats issued by armed Islamist groups.
