Thousands of political prisoners have been arrested and detained since the imposition of the state of emergency in 1981. The following people have been detained for prolonged periods: Ahmed Gad al-Rab Ahmed ‘Ali, Al-Ahmadi Mohammad Ahmed Baysouni, Ahmed Ibrahim al-Naggar, ‘Abd al-Sami’ Hassan Mohammad and ‘Ali ‘Abd al-Nabi ‘Ali. Diyab Saqr Adam was arrested apparently because the police wanted his neighbour: he has not been seen since. Safwat Ahmed ‘Abd al-Ghani’s relatives were arrested after his escape in 1991. ‘Adel Mohammad ‘Abd al-Maguid ‘Abd al-Bary, ‘Ali Mohammad al-Gindi and Mohammad al-Sayyid al-Sayyid Higazi have been repeatedly arrested. Mostafa Muhammad ‘Abd al-Hamid ‘Othman was arrested in late 1989; he remains “disappeared”. Reports of torture are included
