The Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa: Strengthening the promotion and protection of women’s human rights in Africa

On 11 July 2003, the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government adopted the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Protocol) during its Second Ordinary Summit in Maputo, Mozambique. This report summarizes the main provisions of the Protocol and provides a brief overview of its monitoring mechanism.
