Appeal by Secretary General of Amnesty International (AI) to Organization of African Unity (OAU) to protect human rights in Africa

In a statement released on 29 June 1993, AI’s Secretary General appealed to 50 government leaders at the June 1993 session of the OAU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the OAU by taking effective action to protect human rights. In it he asks the OAU Assembly to adopt a six-point program: to publicly and regularly address human rights violations in its member states; to urge implementation of the African Charter; to provide stronger support for the work of the African Commission; to review the human rights situation before sending election observers and assessing the fairness of elections; to ensure human rights are guaranteed in its work of mediating and conciliating conflicts; and to strengthen the African Charter.
