Yugoslavia: Rexhep Rifati (Journalist)

The above-named was sentenced to 60 days’ imprisonment by a local magistrate’s court in Urosevac, Kosovo in early April 1991. He was a correspondent for the Albanian-language daily newspaper Rilindja which was banned by the Serbian authorities in August 1990. The alleged reason for his imprisonment is an article he published on 4 December 1990 in the weekly Kosovarja, under the title “Violence upon violence”. The information currently available to Amnesty International suggests that Rexhep Rifati has been arrested and imprisoned solely for his non-violent political and professional activity.
